Subject Assessment Maintenance - Area tab - Area sub-tab
Use the Area sub-tab of the Area tab to maintain details of subject assessment areas.
Read only results
Some of the results columns in Student Results Maintenance may be greyed out, making them read only. In the following example, the Weighted Average and Ranking fields are greyed out because they have a formula associated with them.
The result column is automatically set to read only if:
- An assessment area is the target of a Summarise to Area field. See Linking subject assessment areas using the Summarise to Area field.
- An assessment area has a formula attached to it. See Subject Assessment Maintenance - Area tab - Formula sub-tab.
If you have a custom calculation procedure you can manually set a result column to read only by selecting a Result Type with a SynergyMeaning of Heading. See luReportResultType lookup table.

Fields
The Assessment Area area contains information about what the subject area relates to. The student's report prints differently depending upon the type of assessment being reported.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Result Group | Group of subject assessment areas that this area is a part of. Tip: Use to create groups if you have a large number of assessment areas to manage. You can work with the groups instead of each individual assessment area in Student Results Maintenance. See Student Results Maintenance - Single Student tab. Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultGroup lookup table. See luReportResultGroup lookup table. |
Result Type | Result values available for the subject assessment area. Result types restrict the valid values that you can enter in this field. This is so that the data presented on reports is consistent. Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultType lookup table. See luReportResultType lookup table. |
External Link | Identifier to link to a relevant external learning standard. Use the button if you do not know the learning standard identifier. The following external learning standards are currently supported:
Note: The Result Type selected must have the relevant SynergyMeaning specified in the lookup table. Currently, result types with a SynergyMeaning of VICCURRIC and NCEA are supported. See luReportResultType lookup table. |
Default Result Classification | Result classification to use by default when entering student results. See:
The result classification is used in:
|
Heading | Assessment area name. |
Abbrev Heading 1 / | Abbreviation of the Heading field. The abbreviated headings are shown in Student Results Maintenance. |
Last Lesson in Sending Group | No longer used, but available for legacy queries. Note: This field is only available if the SubjectAssessments|ShowLastLesson configuration setting is set to True. See Maintaining configuration files in the System maintenance manual. |
Allow Auto-Pick | No longer used, but available for legacy queries. Note: This field is only available if the SubjectAssessments|ShowAutoPick configuration setting is set to true. See Maintaining configuration files in the System maintenance manual. |
Overview | Subject overview of what this area represents or covers. For example, a science class area for biology might explain how the class looks at genetics, the role of gender in animal reproduction and inherited characteristics, and so on. |
Provider | External course provider. |
Context | Subject that the external course provider is responsible for. This is required for NCEA exports from New Zealand schools. NCEA is part of the New Zealand National Qualifications Framework. See the National Certificates of Educational Achievement. |

Search for linked learning standards. For example, if the Result Type has a SynergyMeaning of Victorian Curriculum the Victorian Curriculum Search window is displayed. To select a learning standard:
See Creating new Victorian Curriculum subject assessment areas. Note: The following message is displayed if the Result Type does not have a valid SynergyMeaning that links to external learning standards. | |
View the linked learning area. | |
Insert a new assessment area before the position of the current assessment area. See Inserting new subject assessment areas from the Area sub-tab. | |
Move the assessment area to another position in the list. | |
Merge one or more assessment areas with the current assessment area. See Merging other assessment areas into the current assessment area. | |
Generate the Abbreviated Heading fields based on the Heading field. To update the abbreviated headings:

Reporting area fields
Field | Description |
---|---|
Show on Screen | Select this field to have the result as well as the heading for the subject assessment area displayed on the Student Results Maintenance window. In the following example, the calculated Aggregate Monthly Test Results 'assessment area' is displayed. If you clear this field, the assessment area is not displayed. This is useful for:
|
Force Read Only | Clear the field to allow users to enter or edit results on the Student Results Maintenance window. This is the default setting. Select the field to prevent the assessment area from being updated on the Student Results Maintenance window. The heading and the values are greyed out, preventing users from overriding the calculated results. In the following example the calculated Aggregate Monthly Test Results 'assessment area' is displayed on the screen but cannot be edited. |
Print on Report | Print the assessment area item on the academic report. |
Mark Out of | Specify the maximum numeric value for the mark. |
Overall Result | Select if this is to be the overall result for the students. |
Expected Result | Select to indicate that the subject assessment area is used to store an expected result, not the actual result. See Creating subject assessment areas for entering expected results. Note: You cannot delete a subject assessment area that is being used to store an expected result. You must clear this field before Synergetic will allow you to delete the subject assessment area. |
Overall Seq | If Overall Result is selected this:
Overall Seq 1 and Overall Seq 2 results appear in the Classes tab of Current Student Maintenance. See Current Student Maintenance - Classes tab in the Current students manual. |
Weighting Factor | Priority that this assessment is to take in the calculated result. For example, a weighting factor of 1 is greater than a weighting factor of 0.5. |
Summarise to Area | Subject assessments can be combined to produce a single calculated result. Select a subject assessment from this drop-down list to link the current subject assessment to the selected subject assessment. See Traditional method of summarising and linking assessment areas. |
