Subject Assessment Area Maintenance - Area bar - Area tab
Use the Area tab of the Area bar to maintain details of subject assessment areas.
Read only results
Some of the results columns in Results Maintenance may be greyed out, rendering them read only. In the following example, the Weighted Average and Ranking fields that have a formula associated with them. A result column is automatically set to read only if:
- An assessment area is the target of a Summarise to Seq field. See Linking subject assessment areas using the Summarise to Area field in the Synergetic Assessment and reports manual.
- An assessment area has a formula attached to it. See Subject Assessment Area Maintenance - Area bar - Formula tab.
If you have a custom calculation procedure you can manually set a result column to read only by either selecting a Result Type with a SynergyMeaning of Heading. See luReportResultType lookup table in the Synergetic System maintenance manual.

Fields
The Assessment Area area contains information about what the subject area relates to. The student's report prints differently depending upon the type of assessment being reported.
Field | Description |
---|---|
Result Group | Group of subject assessment areas that this area is a part of. Tip: Use to create groups if you have a large number of assessment areas to manage. You can work with the groups instead of each individual assessment area in Results Maintenance. See Results Maintenance - Single window. Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultGroup lookup table. See luReportResultGroup lookup table in the Synergetic System maintenance manual. |
Result Type | Result values available for the subject assessment area. Result types restrict the valid values that you can enter in this field. This is so that the data presented on reports is consistent. Result types also define how the result is displayed on the Community Portal. Once you have selected a result type you can click next to the External Link field to link an external learning standard to the result type. Note: Values are maintained in the luReportResultType lookup table. See luReportResultType lookup table in the Synergetic System maintenance manual. |
External Link | Identifier to link to a relevant external learning standard. Click if you do not know the learning standard identifier. The following external learning standards are currently supported:
Note: The Result Type selected must have the relevant SynergyMeaning specified in the lookup table. Currently, result types with a SynergyMeaning of AusVELS and NCEA are supported. |
Default Result Classification | Result classification to use by default when entering student results. See Results Maintenance - Single window. Note: The Classification field is only displayed in student results if the Show Result Classification field is selected for the subject assessment. See Subject Assessment Area Maintenance - Summary bar. |
Heading | Assessment area name. |
Abbrev Heading 1 / Abbrev Heading 2 | Abbreviation of the heading field. |
Overview | Subject overview of what this area represents or covers. For example, a science class area for biology might explain how the class looks at genetics, the role of gender in animal reproduction and inherited characteristics, and so on. |
Provider | External course provider. |
Context | Subject that the external course provider is responsible for. This is required for NCEA exports from New Zealand schools. NCEA is part of the New Zealand National Qualifications Framework. See the National Certificates of Educational Achievement (http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/qualifications/ncea/) web site. |

For example, if the Result Type has a SynergyMeaning of Victorian Curriculum the Victorian Curriculum Search window is displayed. To select a learning standard:
See Creating new Victorian Curriculum subject assessment areas. | |
Update the linked external learning standard. | |
Save changes to the assessment area. | |
Move the assessment area to another position in the list. See Moving an assessment area to another sequence in the Synergetic Assessment and reports manual. | |
Merge one or more assessment areas with the current assessment area. See Merging other assessment areas into the current assessment area in the Synergetic Assessment and reports manual. | |
Generate the Abbreviated Heading fields based on the Heading field. |
Reporting area fields
Field | Description |
---|---|
Show on Screen | Select this field to have the result as well as the heading for the subject assessment area displayed on the Results Maintenance window. If you clear this field, the assessment area is not displayed. This is useful for:
|
Print on Report | Print the assessment area item on the academic report. |
Overall Result | Select if this is to be the overall result for the students. |
Force Read Only | Clear the field to allow users to enter or edit results on the Results Maintenance window. This is the default setting. Select the field to prevent the assessment area from being updated on the Results Maintenance window. The heading and the values are greyed out, preventing users from overriding the calculated results. |
Expected Result | Select to indicate that the subject assessment area is used to store an expected result, not the actual result. See Creating subject assessment areas for entering expected results. Note: This field is used for curriculum framework calculations (such as AusVELS). Note: You cannot delete a subject assessment area that is being used to store an expected result. You must clear this field before Synergetic will allow you to delete the subject assessment area. |
Mark Out of | Specify the maximum numeric value for the mark. |
Overall Seq | If Overall Result is selected this:
Overall Seq 1 and Overall Seq 2 results appear in the Classes tab of Current Student Maintenance. See Current Student Maintenance - Classes tab in the Synergetic Current students manual. |
Weighting Factor | Priority that this assessment is to take in the calculated result. For example, a weighting factor of 1 is greater than a weighting factor of 0.5. |
Summarise to Area | Subject assessments can be combined to produce a single calculated result. Select a subject assessment from this drop-down list to link the current subject assessment to the selected subject assessment. See Traditional method of summarising and linking assessment areas in the Synergetic Assessments and reports manual. |
