Subject Assessment Maintenance - Summary tab - Comments sub-tab

Use the Comments sub-tab of the Summary tab to create a comment bank for the various subject assessments or areas. Comment banks can also be linked to a subject or to a staff member.
There are two Comments sub-tabs:

  • This sub-tab, which is used for adding overall comments for subject assessments.
  • The sub-tab on the Area tab, which is used for adding overall comments for assessment areas. See Subject Assessment Maintenance - Area tab - Comments sub-tab.

    The comment bank allows teachers to select pre-approved comments to include in their reports.
    Tip: Use the comment bank facility to save time and to minimise the variation in reports.


 Opening the Comments sub-tab

To open the Comments sub-tab:

  1. Select Module > Assessments > Subject Assessment Area Maintenance.
    The Set Subject Assessment Search Criteria window is displayed.
    Tip: You can also access the Set Subject Assessment Search Criteria window by clicking .

  2. Update the search criteria.
  3. Click .
  4. Select the subject to maintain assessments for. See Searching for subjects and assessment areas.

    The Summary sub-tab of the Summary tab of the Subject Assessment Maintenance window is displayed. 
  5. Click the Comments sub-tab.
    The Comments sub-tab of the Subject Assessment Maintenance window is displayed.

Grid area fields and buttons
Fields
The fields in the grid area for the selected comment correspond to the fields below. See Comment area below.

Description

Add a new comment record at the end.

Insert a new comment record before the selected comment record.

Delete the highlighted comment record.

Move the selected comment bank above the one immediately above it.

Tip: Click repeatedly to move up the desired number of lines.

Move the selected comment bank below the one immediately below it.

Tip: Click repeatedly to move down the desired number of lines.

Field

Description

Seq

Sequence number of the comment.

This is adjusted when you click either or to move the comment.

Topic

Comment topic. Used to categorise the various comments within an assessment area.

For example, a comment topic could be called:

  • General, and include general comments about the students
  • Test, and include comments about test performance in the subject.

Rating

Comment rating. Within a topic, ratings can be used to classify comments.

For example:

  • Excellent, Good, Satisfactory.
  • A, B, C.

Comment

Comment available to be included in student reports. See Loading and copying existing comments to bring in similar existing comments.

Gender references

Gender references (pronouns such as 'his', 'he', 'she', 'her' and so on) change based on the gender of the student the comment is recorded against. For example, the comment 'He has done well on his term project' would change to 'They has done well on their term project' when copied from a male student to an other-gendered student. However, 'They has done well on their term project' would remain unchanged when copied to a male student.

If your organisation is single-sex then enter the comments as they should be for that gender.

Name substitution

Wherever a question mark (?) that has a space on each side of it is encountered in a comment, Synergetic substitutes the ? with the student's preferred name by default.

Tip: If you want to include the question mark symbol without it being substituted with the student's preferred name, place the question mark symbol directly after the word that you want it to appear after.

The system administrator can determine whether the student's given name or preferred name is used. See CommentName configuration setting in the System maintenance manual.

Description

Perform a spell check.

Note: To ensure that the spell check is checking the right field, highlight the text that you want checked first.

Take a copy of the last comment entered and paste it into this comment.

Load comments from another subject assessment or area into the current subject assessment. See Loading and copying existing comments.

Display a list of all comments in a tree structure. Comments displayed can include:

  • Personal comments entered and maintained by you.
  • Assessment comments entered at the subject assessment level. These are usually used for overall comments.
  • Area comments entered at the assessment area level. These are usually used for topic comments.


Common buttons

Description

Switch to the Area tab to maintain information about the subject assessment areas associated with the current subject assessment. See Maintaining subject assessment areas.

Create a new subject assessment. See Creating new subject assessments.

Delete a subject assessment, if there are no associated classes.

Open the Set Subject Assessment Search Criteria window. See Searching for subjects and assessment areas.

Move to the sub-tab on the left of the current sub-tab of the Summary tab.

Move to the sub-tab on the right of the current sub-tab of the Summary tab.
