The highest level of MÄori Mäori language learning the student is involved in.
To allocate a code to an individual student, start at the top of the list and work down. Use the first code that applies to the student.
Type of learning
MÄoriMäori-medium Education – Students are taught curriculum subjects in both MÄori Mäori and English (bilingual).
Te Reo MÄoriMäori – Students learn MÄori Mäori Language as a separate subject.
Taha MÄoriMäori – Students learn waiata, greetings and simple phrases.
Indigenous language level
The following indigenous language levels are used in the NZMOE tab of Current Student Maintenance:

H | 1 | Curriculum is taught in MÄori Mäori 100% of time, i.e. complete immersion (25 hrs per week). |
G | 1 | Curriculum is taught in MÄori Mäori for more than 20 and up to 24.75 hours per week (81 – 99% of total time). |
F | 2 | Curriculum is taught in MÄori Mäori for more than 12.5 and up to 20 hours per week (51 – 80% of total time). |
E | 3 | Curriculum is taught in MÄori Mäori for more than 7.5 and up to 12.5 hours per week (31 – 50% of total time). |
D | 4a | Curriculum is taught in MÄori Mäori for more than 3 and up to 7.5 hours per week (12% - 30% of total time) i.e. more than 70% of instruction is in English. |
C | 4b | Student is learning Te Reo MÄori Mäori as a separate subject for at least 3 hours per week. |
B | 5 | Student is learning Te Reo MÄori Mäori as a separate subject for less than 3 hours per week. |
A | 6 | Student is learning Taha MÄoriMäori. |
Null | N/A | Student not involved in MÄori Mäori Language Learning. |
